Basketball betting: points, lines and overtime

Basketball produces lots of points per game, which makes spreads and totals the key markets. Major leagues play long, dense schedules — plenty of opportunities, and plenty of chances to bet too much. This guide explains, if your 389win account shows a sportsbook, how basketball markets work and where the maths bites.

Moneyline

There is no draw in a basketball result: a tie after regulation goes to overtime. The moneyline therefore has two outcomes and usually includes overtime — check the market rule. Illustrative example, not a 389win term. Prices of 1.45 and 2.80 imply 69.0% + 35.7% = 104.7%, a margin of 4.7 points.

Point spread

The spread levels favourites and underdogs with a points line, such as −6.5 for the favourite. The favourite must win by 7 or more; the underdog "covers" by losing by 6 or fewer, or by winning. Both sides are usually priced near 1.90, which makes the margin easy to see: two sides at 1.90 total 105.3%.

Totals

Bet on more or fewer points than a line, such as 215.5 for the whole game. Pace, injuries and the stakes of the game all move totals. Overtime usually counts toward the game total — and can decide a bet that looked lost (or won). Read the rule.

Quarters, halves and player props

Quarter and half markets split the game into smaller pieces with their own lines. Player props (points, rebounds, assists) depend on minutes played and specific rules for players who do not appear. These markets carry higher margins and more variance; treat them as entertainment, not strategy.

In-play basketball

The pace of basketball makes live prices move on every possession. Scoring runs are normal and do not signal a guaranteed trend. Cash out appears often and includes margin. As always, decide your stake before tip-off.

Volume and schedule

Illustrative example, not a 389win term. Ten 20-unit bets a week add up to 800 units of turnover a month; at an average 5% margin, the expected cost is about 40 units a month — before any analysis mistakes. More on formats in bet types and on limits in responsible gambling.
